Bond line controller (A.K.A. Spheriglass, or Spacer Beads) are used as a filler and an additive in various applications. These glass spheres are rated to Raytheon HMS20-1776 as well as BOEING SCGMS-53004STM0955 as determined by ASTM D-1214 Sieve Analysis of Glass Spheres. We use the bond liner controller when bonding carbon fiber and other dissimilar materials. The glass beads will create an even concentric bond that acts as a barrier between the materials and helps minimize galvanic breakdown. Need a cheat sheet? See our Adhesives Table. What quantity will you need for which epoxy?

DP420 (SKU 1016)

The 2g size of beads is enough for about 1.2 cartridges

E120-HP (SKU 1027-50)

The 2g size of beads is enough for about 1.25 cartridges

ProSet Medium (Black) (SKU ADV-175/275-BK)

The 2g size of beads is enough for about 1/8 of a cartridge

The 25g size of beads is enough for about 1.6 cartridges

NOTE: these come as 450mL cartridges

Features & Benefits

Why use Bond Line Control Beads?

To maintain concentricity between tube and lug. This will maintain centered tubes and also straightness from tube to lug.
Maintain consistent bond line thickness between tube and lug. Consistent bond line thickness is very important for repeatable bond line mechanical properties.
Prevent galvanic corrosion between dissimilar materials. Carbon fiber and some metallics will exhibit negative effects (corrosion of the metal) if they are allowed to come in contact with each other. Carbon fiber and aluminum are the worst case, but it can happen with steel. Stainless steel or titanium are far less susceptible to galvanic corrosion.
The beads do not increase bond strength on their own, but controlling a consistent bond line you will potentially increase the bond strength when compared to inconsistent bond lines.

The size of the beads should be as close to the bond line gap as possible without being larger than the gap. For example, if your measured gap is 0.005”, then you would use the 0.0049” beads.

It is recommended that you mix 2%-3% Bond line beads by weight into the adhesive. For example, if you have 100 grams of mixed adhesive, you would add 2-3 grams of glass beads.
