CLEARANCE

Kevlar is a synthetic fiber made by Dupont and is used in applications ranging from ballistic armor to flame proof race suits. In addition to these lifesaving applications Kevlar in a 2x2 twill woven form offers great drapeability in part manufacture via resin infusion for products like vehicle body panels, canoes and boat hulls.

Be aware of ultraviolet light such as sunlight. This degrades Kevlar and so Kevlar is rarely used outdoors without UV protection. Protection can be afforded in the form of a painted surface OR embed Kevlar inside of other laminated materials like carbon fiber or fiberglass.

Kevlar PRO's

Kevlar has a tensile strength-to-weight ratio 5 times that of steel making it a fantastic material to use where weight and strength are critical.
2x2 woven twill is highly drapeable making forming into complex geomotries easy
Thermal properties are incredible and even better down to cryogenic temperatures (−196 °C)
Can be dyed different colors (natural color is yellow)
Lightweight (0.052 lb/in^3 or 1.44 g/cm^3)
Higher specifc tensile strength than carbon fiber (8.4 vs 6.9)
Stiffer than E-Glass & S-Glass (16.3 msi vs. 10.5 & 12.4 respectively)

Kevlar CON's

Half as stiff as standard modulus carbon fiber (16.3 msi vs. 35msi)
UV degradation (will degrade if left unprotected)

Types of Kevlar fiber;

Kevlar K29 – in industrial applications, such as cables, asbestos replacement, brake linings, and body/vehicle armor.

Kevlar K49 – high modulus used in cable and rope products.

Kevlar K100 – colored version of Kevlar

Kevlar K119 – higher-elongation, flexible and more fatigue resistant

Kevlar K129 – higher tenacity for ballistic applications

Kevlar AP – 15% higher tensile strength than K-29

Kevlar XP – lighter weight resin and KM2 plus fiber combination

Kevlar KM2 – enhanced ballistic resistance for armor applications

Cutting / Machining Directions

Kevlar can be incredibly difficult to cut. We recommend using finely serrated scissors and or electric scissors to cut. Another method is to use a hot knife, essentially melting the Kevlar fabric away.
