Custom Composite Shapes and Structures

Custom Composite Shapes and Structures

Build-to-print or custom designed ◾ Comprehensive composite engineering services ◾ ◾ Materials and process expertise ◾ Expanded, extensive composite manufacturing facilities

Rock West Composites can build your composite design, from the very beginning stages of the concept and design to high-volume production. You can provide concept sketches or simply tell us what your structure needs to do – withstand certain loads, maximum allowed deflections, weight, precision, operating temperatures, etc. We can design and manufacture parts with complex geometries of all sizes for applications across all industries. If you have questions, call our San Diego office at 858-537-6260 or request a quote.

Composite Product and Component Design and Development

Composite materials can give your product a performance edge in the market. We are here to help with any composites-related inquiries included:

  • Determining which components are candidates for composites
  • Selecting materials
  • Determining strength or stiffness requirements
  • Qualifying safety margins
  • Defining tests to measure or demonstrate capabilities

We can also help review, refine, or define requirements. Once specifications are in place, we can identify the key parameters that could drive costs, risk performance schedule delay and other concerns.

Resin Infusion Process (RTM/VARTM)

Resin infusion is a cost effective way to achieve structurally sound, complex geometric parts. Our RTM/VARTM can be used for projects requiring composite structures that are small or extremely large, and we also use it for large flat plate stock (10’+). It is a great method when an autoclave is not available and or the cost of operating an autoclave is unjustifiable.

What is the resin infusion process?

A vacuum is generally created using a vacuum pump or a vacuum generator (uses compressed air to generate vacuum).

  • Resin is mixed in appropriate ratios and de-gassed
  • The laminate is simultaneously vacuum bagged and sealed awaiting Infusion
  • The next step is to introduce the resin. Pre-mixed and de-gassed resin is pulled from one end of the laminate to the other, assisted by vacuum, thereby filling all voids in the carbon fiber material
  • Once completely infused, the hoses are sealed off and left to cure.

After curing, the solid composite form is removed from the tool. In the case of a tank or other closed end vessel, the mandrel could be left inside the composite form or dissolved out via various methods.

New, World-class Headquarters

Rock West Composites now has over 190,000 square feet of combined manufacturing and office space between facilities in San Diego, Salt Lake City and Baja California. We focus specialties in certain areas to maximize effectiveness, and we are adept at moving jobs between locations depending on program requirements so you can get the highest quality product for the best value.

Our new headquarters at 107,000 square feet will be able to accommodate large scale composites production and significant new capital equipment with the intention of growing the company’s already expansive capabilities. The new facility has an adaptive infrastructure that allows for rapid refitting of manufacturing areas to accommodate new program requirements, and there are clean room areas with varying levels of classification to accommodate customer needs. We have everything you need to make your program successful!

Our engineering team has the depth and breadth of experience needed to complement your team and deliver programs of all sizes, from complex large programs to smaller component projects. We can support your endeavor at any stage of its life cycle. If you have questions, call our San Diego office at 858-537-6260 or request a quote.
