Carbon Fiber "Quasi - Directional" Plate

Rock West's resin infused quasi-directional plate offers superior stiffness in the 0° direction and a very unique aesthetic while maintaining some structural properties in the 90° direction to reduce the chance of the plate splitting. This plate is ~2x stiffer than our standard all fabric plate when tested in the 0° direction. In the 90° direction, stiffness reduces by a factor of 0.6x.

The first thing you may notice about this plate is its unique aesthetic. It has a woven plate appearance since the individual "tows" of carbon fiber are held in place with a very small plastic"string". This string is necessary for the uni fiber to maintain straightness during the resin infusion process.

Our 103-xx plate product has 3 plies of carbon fiber. [0/(0/90/0] where the middle ply is our 12k woven twill carbon fiber fabric.

  • 0° fibers maximize bending stiffness and run along the length of the part. Consider bending a tube over your knee.
  • 45° fibers maximize torsional stiffness and are typically plied together in an opposing manner, i.e. ±45°. Consider twisting a tube like a vehicle's driveshaft.
  • 90° (or "hoop") fibers maximize crushing stiffness and generally assist in overall durability. Consider laying a tube on the ground and stepping on it.
