Unlike metals which have similar properties in all directions (isotropic), the properties of composites are varying, dependent on the orientation of the fibers in each layer. This particular carbon fiber fabric tube has an internal diameter (ID) of 1.50" and an outer diameter (OD) of 1.625". The outer ply of material on this tube is a 2x2 twill weave (diagonal appearance seen below) which will prevent fiber breakout better than unidirectional material. Thus, fabric tubes provide an ideal surface for machining. The core of this tube is almost always comprised of multi-directional "uni" plies which makes most carbon fiber fabric & unidirectional tubes ideal for bending and compression applications.
Roll wrapped tubing is manufactured using multiple layers of prepreg carbon fiber (and if noted, other) materials. In general each layer is about 0.006 inches thick which means that a tube with a wall thickness of 0.060 inches will typically be composed of 9-10 individual layers of carbon fiber. The number of layers (plys) allows us to vary the orientation of the fibers throughout the thickness, creating a high performance, engineered product.

Fabric roll wrapped tubing offers many benefits over uni-directional and even filament wound tubing. That isn't to say it is the best however. Here are a few reasons you may wish to consider fabric roll wrapped tubing for your application.

After curing, the solid composite form is extracted from the mandrel as a tube. Rock West Composites has vast experience and know-how with the roll-wrapping process and takes pride in our unmatched quality and efficiency.
For smaller, shorter tubes. Roll-wrapping is primarily used for producing small to medium diameter tubes of shorter lengths — 0.250" through 12.0" diameter, up to 8' long. Roll-wrapping is typically the most economical process for smaller quantity production runs.
